Our Seedlings

We have begun planning a garden for this spring! Last weekend Jim built me two raised bed gardens... so Mckenna and I got things started with planting some seedlings! I don't have much of a green thumb, so here's hoping that this little cutie pie does!

I have been pinning some things on Pinterest in order to learn a bit more about gardening.
One of the sources I read suggested creating indoor green houses for growing seedlings!
Perfect! I can handle that!!

We gathered up our supplies and got to work!

I had been saving our paper towel rolls and a couple of plastic containers from the salad mixes that I like to buy! Perfect little greenhouses!!

First we added some dirt into the bottom of the plastic container. Just enough to cover the bottom. You will be positioning the tubes into the dirt.

We cut the paper towel tubes into fourths and labeled them.
(Don't label the tubes... use the old fashioned popsicle sticks stuck in the dirt to label your veggies.
Our labels came off with the moisture in the greenhouse!)

The reason for using the tubes is that we can plant each seedling into the garden while it is still in the tube. The tube will decompose! Great recycling project!

Next we added the small tubes into the dirt and then filled them with more dirt.

Once they were filled with dirt we sprinkled in the seeds. Easy!

We are growing:
Tomatoes, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Peppers, Carrots, Green Beans and Basil

I had also read that you could do the same type of thing with a cardboard egg container. So, we are experimenting and doing both styles. We just added dirt and sprinkled in the seeds.

Mckenna was very curious about the seeds and how they all looked different!

We watered the seeds and then moved them to a window where they could get sun (if the sun ever comes out) and where they would hopefully be left undisturbed!
We added the lid back on the salad container for the green house effect.
We left the egg container open.

After about, oh, 3 minutes, Mckenna ran to check and see if they had started growing!!

Report 1:
We already have some sprouts!! The greenhouses are AMAZING! We planted the seeds last Thursday and by Sunday morning we had sprouts! Mckenna is loving that something is actually happening! This is such a great way to grow seeds when you have kids! It happened so quick! I didn't think we would have anything for at least 7-10 days. That's a long time for a 3 year old!

Our only problem is that the labels have "sweated" off! Ha! I need to go back and match up the greenhouse to my pictures! This is where it pays to be the crazy lady that takes lots of pictures!! So I advise labeling in a new way!

I am really amazed that you can see the "greenhouse" effect... humidity building in the plastic container! So fun!
